We spent a couple of nights on a short trip to St. Ives –  we are talking St Ives in Cambridgeshire – it used to be St Ives Huntingdonshire but Huntingdonshire does not exist anymore. This is the St Ives where the man was going – the one who met another man with a lot of wives, sacks and cats.

We drove first to Wicken Fen, a National Trust nature reserve and spent a delightful and restful day wandering along the dykes and ditches. There is always something interesting to see whatever the time of year.
Our pitch for the night was two or three miles outside of St Ives, a Caravan and Motorhome Club Certified location. Certified Locations are small sites privately owned, with basic but adequate facilities. They are usually quiet and a bit off the beaten track. Only open to Caravan and motorhome Club members. We were delighted with our setting. Although it was beside a fairly busy road we were pitched under trees with views across open fields.

A dedicated cycle path runs alongside the road past the campsite into St Ives. We try to use our bikes as much as we can when we are away but sometimes places turn out not to be as cycle friendly as we thought they would. Biking to St Ives was a winner. A wide and properly maintained cycle path all the way. St Ives is a really old settlement; the river Ouse flows through the town and is wide and used to be navigable to the sea. St Ives used to be a busy inland trading port.
